Traditional 9-to-5 Business Workday is a Thing of the Past!
What time of day do you do your work? According to a recent survey published by CareerBuilder.com, 59% of workers surveyed said they believe the 9-to-5 business workday is “a thing of the past,” and almost half (45%) said they currently complete their work outside of office hours. We’re not surprised – especially since we frequently “burn the midnight oil,” too!
The survey report states, “A typical workday historically involved eight consecutive hours of effort for full-time workers, but today most don’t stop working when the clock hits 5 p.m.” Other interesting survey findings include:
Sales and IT professionals are most likely to answer emails outside of normal business hours.
More than any other age group, 65% of workers who are 45 to 54 years old and 61% of workers who are 55+ agreed that the typical 8-hour workday was a thing of the past.
Today, a “workday” and how we work seem to be all about flexibility. In fact, flexibility is considered a “top trend in modern workforce management” right now. A recent news report from HRdive.com, says, “The Industrial Revolution may have brought about the eight-hour workday, but the technological revolution makes the idea of 9 to 5 obsolete. Employees are responding to emails before bed, taking calls on their commutes and getting tasks done at home – all of which constitute ‘time worked.’”
